Nawafil of Shab e Barat 2024

Shab e Barat, also known as the Mid-Sha’ban Night, is a significant night in the Islamic calendar celebrated by Muslims worldwide. It is believed to be a night of forgiveness, blessings, and the determination of destinies for the coming year. During this blessed night, many Muslims engage in prayers and supplications, seeking Allah’s mercy and blessings.

One of the recommended practices on Shab e Barat is praying twelve nawafl prayers. These twelve nawafl prayers can be divided into six sets of two rakat each. Here’s a guide on performing these six nawafl prayers:

Preparation:

Before starting your prayers, ensure you have performed ablution (wudu) and are in a clean and quiet place. Make sure you have a prayer rug or clean surface to pray on.

Intention:

Set your intention before each set of two rakat prayers. You can simply say in your heart, “I am offering two rakat nawafl prayers for the sake of Allah.”

Performance:

  • First Rakat:
    • Stand facing the Qiblah (direction of the Kaaba in Makkah).
    • Raise your hands to your ears with the thumbs touching the earlobes and say, “Allahu Akbar” (Allah is Great).
    • Fold your arms across your chest, right arm over left, just below the navel.
    • Recite Surat Al-Fatihah (the opening chapter of the Quran).
    • Recite another Surah from the Quran. You can choose any Surah you like, but many Muslims recite Surat Al-Ikhlas (Chapter 112) or Surat Al-Falaq (Chapter 113) on Shab e Barat.
    • Bow (ruku) by bending at the waist, keeping your back straight and parallel to the ground. Say, “Subhana Rabbiyal Adhim” (Glory be to my Great Lord) three times.
    • Stand upright after ruku.
    • Prostrate (sajdah) by placing your forehead, nose, and hands on the ground. Say, “Subhana Rabbiyal A’ala” (Glory be to my Most High Lord) three times.
    • Sit on your heels in between the two prostrations (sajdah) and say, “Rabbighfirli” (My Lord, forgive me) three times.
    • Repeat the prostration (sajdah) again.
  • Second Rakat:
    • Repeat all the steps mentioned for the first rakat, except after the second prostration, you will sit up for the final Tashahhud.
    • Recite the Tashahhud:
      • At-Tahiyyatu lillahi wassalatu wassalamu ‘alaika ya Rasul Allah. Wassalamu ‘alaina wa ‘ala ‘ibadiLlahis-salihin. Ashhadu an la ilaha ill-Allah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluhu. (All praises are for Allah, and prayers and peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah. And peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.)
    • Recite the salutation:
      • As-salamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullahi. (Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah.)
  • Repeat the same steps for the remaining five sets of two rakat prayers.
